Slow Down and Read the CMP Question

That’s The Most Important CMP Exam Tip

“The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” — Dr. Seuss

If you’re preparing for the CMP exam, here is the most important test-taking strategy I can give you:

Read the question.

Not what you think it says.
Not what you assume they’re asking.

Read what is actually written.

It sounds obvious, but this is one of the biggest mistakes CMP candidates make.

Why Many CMP Candidates Miss Questions

When I was studying for my Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) exam, I thought I was reading every question carefully.

But what I was really doing was this:

    1. I skimmed the question.

    1. I thought, “I know what they’re asking.”

    1. I rushed to find the answer.

The problem?

I wasn’t answering the actual question.

I was answering the question I thought they asked.

There’s a big difference — and it can cost you valuable points on the exam.

The Three-Step Strategy for Reading CMP Exam Questions

Inside the Event Solutions Academy, my CMP students practice a simple technique that dramatically improves their test accuracy.

Step 1: Read the Question Carefully

Slow down and read every word. Pay attention to the details the question writer included.

Step 2: Read It Again

Yes, again. Many candidates miss key clues on the first pass.

Step 3: Restate the Question in Your Own Words

Before you look at the answer options, pause and ask yourself:

“What is this question really asking?”

Then say it in your own language.

This removes confusing wording and helps you focus on the core concept being tested.

Example CMP Exam Question

Here’s an example of how this works.

Original Question:

Volunteers greet association members at the convention and ask each a series of pre-selected questions concerning the event functions. Volunteers are conducting which type of research on the association’s membership?

Now restate it in simpler language:

Simplified Version:

Association members are being asked survey questions during the convention. What type of research is this?

By simplifying the question, you eliminate distractions and focus on the key idea.

If You Can’t Restate the Question, Read It Again

If you cannot explain the question in your own words, you haven’t fully understood it yet.

Go back and read it again.

Everything you need to answer correctly is already in the question.

Don’t add extra meaning.
Don’t assume additional details.
And don’t skip over important words.

“But Won’t This Slow Me Down on the CMP Exam?”

Many candidates worry that reading questions carefully will cause them to run out of time.

In reality, the opposite happens.

When you read questions correctly the first time, you spend less time second-guessing yourself and fewer questions need to be revisited later.

The best way to prove this to yourself is by taking a full-length CMP practice exam.

The actual CMP exam includes 165 questions, and practicing with full-length tests builds both your timing and confidence.

Practice the Right Way

At the Event Solutions Academy, students practice with full-length CMP-style exams, building the habits that lead to success on exam day.

When you practice reading questions carefully now, you’ll walk into the CMP exam ready to answer what is actually being asked.

And that’s when everything starts to click.

As Frederick Douglass once said:

“Once you learn to read, you will be forever free.”

The same is true for the CMP exam.
